Mashed Brown Butter Sweet Potatoes

Cook Time: 20 minutes

Total Time: 30 minutes

Serving Size: 6-8 servings


  • 4 pounds sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) salted butter
  • 3/4 cup milk or cream
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg


  1. Add chopped sweet potatoes to a large pot of salted cold water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer 20 minutes or until potatoes are just fork tender.
  2. While potatoes are cooking, add butter to a medium saucepan. Set over medium low heat and cook until butter is browned, stirring often. Remove from heat.
  3. Drain potatoes and return to pot. Add browned butter, milk or cream, maple syrup, salt, and nutmeg.
  4. Use a vegetable masher or electric mixer to beat until smooth.
  5. Serve immediately.

  1. Delicious! I made these for Thanksgiving dinner and they were a huge hit!!! So simple and easy to make. I did add a little brown sugar, because I felt like I wanted mine a touch sweeter-but that’s just my personal preference. I will be making these again, often!!!!
