Frank and Terry Ziehm raised their three boys, Brian, Eric, and Stuart on the Tiashoke Farms in Cambridge, NY about 40 miles north of Albany. All three boys worked and played on the family farm as youngsters, and all three went on to attend Cornell University. All three decided to return to the farm and take over its management as they started families of their own.

This grilled cheese is one of the Ziehm family favorites with sharp Cheddar, fresh apples and apple butter sandwiched between slices of hearty oatmeal bread and grilled to perfection.


Farm Girl’s Fave Grilled Cheese

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 10 minutes

Total Time: 20 minutes

Yield: 2 sandwiches

Serving Size: 1 sandwich

Farm Girl’s Fave Grilled Cheese


  • 4 slices oatmeal bread
  • 1 tablespoon Cabot Salted Butter, softened
  • 2 tablespoons apple butter
  • 4 ounces Cabot New York Extra Sharp Cheddar, thinly sliced
  • 1 Gala apple, cored and thinly sliced


  1. Spread 1 side of each bread slice with butter. Turn slices over and spread second side with apple butter.
  2. Place skillet over medium-low heat. While skillet is heating, top 2 bread slices with cheese and apple slices, then set remaining bread slices on top, butter-side-up.
  3. Place sandwiches in skillet and cook slowly, turning midway, until cheese is melted and bread is golden, reducing heat if sandwiches are browning too quickly.
