Ingredients

  • 3/4 pound ground sirloin
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 medium green bell pepper, seeded and diced
  • 5 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup chicken or beef stock, or water
  • 3/4 cup tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed chili flakes
  • 6 hot dogs
  • 6 hot dog buns or rolls
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

Step 1

Set large skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, add ground sirloin and cook, crumbling with wooden spoon, until brown and crispy, about 10 minutes. Drain off any fat or liquid in skillet and add onions and bell peppers. Cook until softened. Add 3 tablespoons butter and stir until melted. Sprinkle flour over butter mixture and cook for about 30 seconds. Stir in the stock or water and bring to simmer. Stir in tomato sauce, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, mustard powder and chili flakes and cook on low until thickened.

Step 2

Set separate skillet over medium-high heat. Add remaining 2 tablespoons butter. Once melted, add hot dogs and cook until crispy, turning often, about 5 minutes.

Step 3

Split open rolls and insert hot dog into each. Top each with sloppy joe mixture and sprinkle with cheese. Serve immediately.
