Apple Cobbler

Classic apple cobbler is a year-round favorite, but it’s often requested in cooler months when we crave cozy treats and warm spices. You can use almost any variety of apples for this cobbler but be sure to use firm apples, such as Granny Smith or Pink Lady, that don’t indent with pressure.

Classic Apple Cobbler

    For the Filling:
  • 6 large firm apples, peeled, cored and sliced
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon apple pie spice*
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • For the Topping:
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 4 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk or whole milk
  • 1/4 cup coarse sugar


  1. Preheat oven to 375°F. Butter a 2-quart baking dish; set aside.
  2. Combine apple slices and lemon juice in large bowl; toss until apples are coated with juice. Add apples to large saucepan and add remaining filling ingredients. Cook over medium-high heat, stirring frequently until mixture comes together and creates a syrup that coats the apples (about 5-7 minutes). Pour apple mixture into prepared dish.
  3. Combine flour, sugar, baking powder and salt in large bowl; whisk together until incorporated. Add butter, egg and milk; stir well. Drop spoonfuls of batter on top of apple mixture and spread it slightly using the back of a spoon. Generously sprinkle with coarse sugar. Bake 35-40 minutes or until apples are tender and crust is golden brown. Serve warm with a scoop of ice cream.
  4. *If you don’t have apple pie spice, you can use 1 teaspoon each cinnamon, nutmeg and ground ginger.
