Brown Butter Old Fashioned
A classic cocktail for a reason, elevate your Old Fashioned with brown butter-infused bourbon. Plan in advance, as it does need some time to infuse the bourbon. But once it's ready, you can delight in enjoying a delicious buttery cocktail in just a few minutes.

Ingredients
- For the Brown Butter Bourbon:
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 cup bourbon

For the Old Fashioned:
- 1/2 teaspoon sugar
- 3-4 dashes bitters
- 2 ounces brown butter bourbon
- Orange zest, for garnish
- Maraschino cherry, for garnish
Instructions
Step 1
Add butter to a saucepan over medium heat. Cook until the butter foams and steams. Swirl the pan as the foam subsides and closely watch as the butter turns golden brown and solids form. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.Step 2
Pour bourbon and browned butter into a jar; stir to combine and seal. Let stand at room temperature for 1-2 hours then freeze for 3-4 hours until butter has separated from bourbon and is frozen. Remove the brown butter from jar and pour bourbon through a fine mesh sieve.Step 3
To make the cocktail, add sugar and bitters to a rocks glass. Stir to dissolve sugar slightly. Add bourbon and fill glass with ice; stir for 10-15 seconds or until well-chilled. Garnish with a strip of orange zest and maraschino cherry.
Tips:
- Save the discarded brown butter for another use. It’s delicious in a baked good or on top of roasted vegetables.
- The brown butter bourbon will keep in the fridge for 1-2 weeks.
